Corn Benefits : Why it’s Good to be Corny!

The health benefits of sweet corn are more far-reaching than you might imagine at first. While everyone else goes on about green tea and the acai berry, I’m going to sing the praises of the mighty corn! Corn is incredibly versatile, and it’s used in all kinds of dishes. You can find corn at every country worldwide, although corn is only produced in certain countries, such as Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and South Mexico. Corn has a composition of 80 % carbohydrate , 10 % protein , 4.5 % fat , 3.5% fiber, and 2% micro-nutrient. It’s a good source of fiber, and regular consumption is great for the colon. We create all kinds of products from corn, such as corn flour, corn oil, cornflake, corn syrup, popcorn, rice corn and corn soap.
Lets take a look at all these great benefits of corn products:

1.Pop Corn
A much adored treat-snack, though we seem to require a movie to watch while we eat it, even at home! However, it‘s a much better alternative than other types of fun snacks because you‘re getting calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin A, B, B6, C and K. All this without the detrimental properties of dairy or cocoa based snacks we might eat instead of popcorn. The health benefits of corn are so numerous, it’s a wonder we don’t think of it as a superfood!

2.Cornflakes
According to David L. Hoffman from the Complementary Medicine America University, cornflakes can improve your immune system. Cornflakes contain phosphorus, and a good balance of carbohydrate, protein and fat, making it a great quick-energy food. If you plan on eating it every day, you should take a good look around your supermarket, you may well find a  number of varieties. Why not tap into the health benefit of sweet corn every morning?

3.Corn oil
Corn oil is made from processed shelled corn. Along with flaxseed oil, it’s one of the best oils around: it has the ability to improve HDL (good cholesterol) and help to decrease LDL (bad cholesterol). The LDL standard for humans is 150 mg and HDL standard is 50 mg. Corn oil is especially useful for hypertension, and people with coronary heart problems. This product is considered by some to be among the top corn uses for health.

4. Corn syrup
Corn flour can be processed into glucose synthesis, and finally to be corn syrup. The baby food, bread, tinned fruit, and confectionary industries often use corn syrup, but if a product contains ‘high-fructose corn syrup’ as one of the main ingredients we recommend that you avoid it as it will wreak havoc with your blood sugar and insulin levels.

5. Corn flour
Corn flour, sometimes called cornmeal, is a standard ingredient of baking powder, sauces, cakes and candies.

6. Corn soap
Corn soap is associated with Dr. Chutima Khoswatana from Nakhon Sawan research center, Thailand. It’s great for cleaning oily skin.

Now you know all about the benefits of sweet corn, I recommend that you try corn on the cob without butter; once you get a load of that sweet corn goodness you’ll realise it doesn’t really need any additions.
